CDC is worried about the rising meningococcal illness outbreak in Florida. Around 24 cases and 7 fatalities, predominantly in gay and bisexual men, have been reported. Meningitis cases in Florida have risen beyond the state′s 5-year average.

The disease is caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria and transmitted bacteria through respiratory or throat droplets such as spit and cough among people who are in close contact. It infects the bloodstream causing septicemia and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord lining. The illness is uncommon and, when if detected early, is treatable with antibiotics. The symptoms, which first mimic the flu but "usually worsen very quickly," include a high fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, or a dark purple rash.

CDC recommended vaccination for people living in Florida or traveling there, and emphasized that homosexual, bisexual, and other males who have sex with men get vaccinated against meningococcal disease. During the outbreak, everyone in Florida can receive a MenACWY vaccine free of cost at any county health department and must be vaccinated 15 days before travel. All HIV-positive individuals in the United States are frequently advised to have the MenACWY vaccination. Scientists have suggested that vaccination is the best protective measure.
